"The university needs to understand that the needs of their students are not just for a 'moment,' but is truly something that affects us at-large. There needs to be real actions and [UF] needs to hear their black students. Action. Action. Action. The importance of making students feel as though the university is doing real work to help their students to feel SAFE." Participant 16

Centralizing Black Students' Voices During UF's Crisis Response to COVID-19 and BLM

In this student-led project, we use photovoice and listening sessions to (1) assess perceptions of student support provided by the University of Florida (UF) during COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter (BLM) Movement, (2) gauge the role of community nonprofits in helping support Black students, and (3) identify solutions to support UF’s Black students during crisis.

Black students at UF were invited to submit photos and narratives of their experience as college students. Students also participated in a series of three facilitated conversations where they shared their experiences and generated recommendations for how the university can better support Black students during times of crisis.

The research study is funded by the UF Office of Research Racial Justice Grant: Award Number AWD09458. Contact ARJProject@ifas.ufl.edu if you have any questions.

Amplifying Black Students' Voices is a project in the Department of Family, Youth, and Community Sciences at the University of Florida (UF) examining the support Black students experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. The purpose of the project was to identify existing support for Black students, strengthen the relationship between Black students and UF, and identify solutions to close the gap of student support in times of crisis.
